Volkswagen Group Rus Launches Volkswagen Taos Production at Nizhny Novgorod Plant
- Production of the new Volkswagen Taos is launched in Nizhny Novgo-rod
- Investments in production launch totaled 63 million euros (6 billion rubles)
- New equipment tailored to Volkswagen Taos manufacture was pur-chased and installed and an automated production line has been built in the welding shop
Nizhny Novgorod, May 27, 2021 – Volkswagen Group Rus announces the start of production of a completely new SUV for the Russian market, the Volkswagen Taos, at the GAZ Group plant in Nizhny Novgorod. The official event dedicated to production launch was attended by CEO of Volkswagen Group Rus Stefan Mecha, Technical Director of Volkswagen Group Rus Stefan Depka, and Vadim Sorokin, President of the GAZ Group. The Volkswagen Taos will be the most compact and affordable Volkswagen SUV on the Russian market.
Volkswagen Group Rus continues to make significant investments into launches of new prod-ucts – investments in the production of the Volkswagen Taos totaled 63 million euros (6 billion rubles). The production equipment has been significantly updated for the manufacture of this model. Apart from installing new equipment, allowing online monitoring of the most important car connections, a new automated production line was built in the welding shop for the production of Volkswagen Taos bonnets, boots and wings, which allows to provide high-quality welding of car body parts.

The Volkswagen Taos will be available for Russian customers with two engine options: a naturally aspirated 110-hp engine combined with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, as well as a turbocharged 150-hp engine com-bined with an 8-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive or a 7-speed automatic transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive. Its equipment may include a wide range of IQ.Drive driver assistance systems, IQ.Light adaptive light technology, advanced safety systems, a package of winter options, Climatronic dual-zone climate control, rain and light sensors, front and rear parking sensors, ambient lighting, and a rear-view camera with a washer. Russian customers will be able to choose the vehicle in one of three trims – Respect, Status and Exclu-sive – as well as in a special JOY! version.
Nizhny Novgorod has become the third location in the world to produce the new Volkswagen Taos – the model is also built in Puebla, Mexico, to supply cars for North America, and in Gen-eral Pacheco, Argentina, for South America.
The production of the Volkswagen Taos in Nizhny Novgorod has been launched as part of the partnership between Volkswagen Group Rus and GAZ Group, where Volkswagen and ŠKODA cars are assembled under contract at the Gorky Automobile Plant. Since the cooperation be-gan, new assembly and body shops have been built, the paint shop has been modernized, and the logistics and quality control system have been improved. Now, Volkswagen Group Rus builds four models at the Gorky Automobile Plant: the Volkswagen Taos, the ŠKODA KODIAQ, the ŠKODA KAROQ, and the ŠKODA OCTAVIA.
